Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

As you age, experiencing tooth loss is quite common. Disease, injury, and normal wear-and-tear can all lead to tooth decay and, eventually, tooth loss. When this happens, there are solutions that serve to replace these missing teeth, restoring the health of your smile and your confidence to go along with it. Dentures are a commonly used method to replace lost teeth, with millions of Americans opting for them each year.

Dentures are designed to be a removable oral insert that serves to replace your missing teeth. The mouthpiece is designed to blend into your gums. There are two kinds of dentures, commonly referred to as partial dentures or complete dentures.

How are complete and partial dentures different from each other?

Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth on either the upper or lower ridge have fallen out or have been removed. Complete dentures can be made usually 12 weeks after your teeth have been extracted to give your mouth enough time to heal.

If you are not missing all of your teeth on either the upper or lower portion of your mouth, then partial dentures are a solution. A partial denture is designed to fit alongside your existing teeth, filling in the gaps and serving to ensure that your remaining teeth do not move. Both full and partial dentures are connected to a gum-colored base that is made out of plastic, holding them in place.
